Irreverent Medical Acronyms

Irreverent Medical Acronyms

Doctors use a variety of acronyms and other medical slang terms to describe patients and other healthcare personnel and other medical situations. Many of those terms are pejorative.

In hospitals, morbid humour, irreverence and euphemism is a way of coping with daily exposure to injury, disease and death. In the English speaking world, medical slang has entered the popular culture via television hospital and forensic science dramas such as ERHouse M.D.NCISScrubs and Grey's Anatomy.

In many countries, facetious or insulting acronyms are now considered unethical and unacceptable, and patients can access their medical records. Medical facilities risk being sued by patients offended by the descriptions. As a result, medical slang nowadays tends to be restricted to oral use and to informal notes or emails, which do not form part of a patient’s formal records.
