REMO Since 1988

REMO Since 1988

Change is Fun ... and, to that end, you may have noticed that our URL has changed from remogeneralstore.com to remosince1988.com so as to reflect the broadening of our scope from selling THINGS and DESIGNS to also telling STORIES. The new URL which mirrors the wording on our beloved long time head logo is both descriptive and distinctive. We hope you like it.

Today is actually a big day. It was exactly 34 years ago that we opened the doors to our Darlinghurst General Store for the very first time. For a trip down remory land go HERE ... and check out the flickr slide show HERE.

To celebrate our 34th birthday for this week only we will reduce the price of EVERYTHING in our store to 88% of the listed price. Just enter the code RS88 into the promo code feel as you're checking out. Start HERE.

Canvas Sun Hats

Summer is upon us and our Canvas Sun Hats are coming into their own again.

Order yours HERE.
__________________________

This was one of our very earliest developments under the REMO brand, and is unchanged in design since it was first introduced to our Darlinghurst General Store CustOMERs in 1991.

The REMO Canvas Sun Hat, although not a fashion item, has probably been our most copied product ... although the imitators never got it quite right with the width of the brim or quality of the make.

Made by hand here in Sydney by the same master milliner that used to make for us back in the Darlinghurst days! (See, we're not the only people doing the same thing after almost 30 years.)

100% cotton canvas. Rim-stitched for extra strength. Lined with cotton. Made to be scrunched up and shoved in a bag. Made to last. Just in time for summer.

One adult sizes fits most. Browse and order HERE.

NB: Thanks to the guys down at the Bondi Icebergs Pool for the impromptu early morning modelling session back in 2007. Dion's involvement is especially relevant. His REMO Canvas Sun Hat (worn continuously for 17 years) had finally fallen apart. We managed to get him a replacement hat just in time ... and then again in 2016.

Cotton Velvet Eye Masks Back in Stock

Cotton Velvet Eye Masks Back in Stock

Fresh stocks of our eye masks have just hit the warehouse.

Our famous Cotton Velvet Eye Mask ... lovingly handmade here in Sydney.

This is not just an in-flight thing. It seems that lots of people like to sleep with an eye mask on. Bedrooms get flooded in sunlight a bit too early for some. And shift workers need to be able to create night at any time. But, for many more, it's become a sleeping ritual to rank alongside: bedtime reading, hand cream and maybe a little nightcap.

Life before the REMO Eye Mask was tough. Wearers had to make do with the nasty freebie versions that they give you on planes. They are generally made of plastic and nylon and, as a result, tend to rustle when you move and make your eyes sweat! They also let little bits of light in from underneath.

We reverse engineered a series of eye masks from around the world and decided that what they all needed was a winged keel of padded black cotton! Many prototypes, meetings and samples later (we even had Tiny Tim test drive one of them), we settled on the current design; made by hand in Sydney from pure Belgian cotton velvet.

Art Mystery to Solve

Art Mystery to Solve

When the big physical REMO store closed in 1996 there were two original pieces of Martin Sharp's Eternity at REMO owned personally by Remo that were looking to find a home. Martin, with some help from cousin Russell Sharp, ended up with the actual 5m wide Eternity mural, and Remo ended up retaining the small hand painted version that you see circled in red in this image from 2007. This mini original was used to create the screens for this Eternity at REMO T Shirt design. It is painted on white card with a hand written: Please return to Martin Sharp and a phone number. Remo and family have travelled with this piece of art from apartment to apartment in Sydney, Silicon Valley & New York; and only recently noticed that it had gone missing. This is a mystery! Can you help us solve it? Have you seen it around?

If so ... let us know HERE

Camp REMO | 1993

Camp REMO | 1993

Today's REMO History lesson dates back to 1993. You can tell that from the marshmallows. For that year's people photoshoot we forced everyone to wear shorts and sand shoes for this Camp REMO moment. The big fibreglass REMO letters (which we still have in storage) were made by Funky 3D (aka Hugh Ramage and Peter King).
